Harness the Power of Curiosity to Foster Students’ Love for Learning From their youngest years, our children are innately curious. They explore the world around them through play, imagination, and discovery. They build meaning, they create understanding, and they unabashedly share their learning. It’s in this process that they find joy in life and relevance in the world around them. Why, then, do some of our students become disconnected from their learning in school? Where does this natural curiosity go? And how, as educators, can we ensure all of our students experience a meaningful and wonder-filled journey through their education? It’s these questions that Trevor MacKenzie, author of the critically acclaimed book Dive into Inquiry, answers in Inquiry Mindset. Co-written with kindergarten teacher Rebecca Bathurst-Hunt, Inquiry Mindset offers a highly accessible journey through inquiry in the younger years. You’ll learn how to . . . Empower your learners, increase engagement, and accelerate achievement. Harness the wonderings and curiosities of your students and leverage them into powerful learning opportunities. Cultivate an inquiry mindset both as a teacher and in your students! Adopt an inquiry approach that results in the most authentic and inspiring learning you’ve ever experienced!

Inquiry Mindset Nurturing the Dreams Wonders and Curiosities of Our Youngest Learners Volume 2 Trevor MacKenzie Rebecca BathurstHunt Books Reviews

  • This book does a great job exploring how to foster inquiry from many different directions. It is best ised when you are trying to add inquiry into your classroom, but not as helpful at teaxhing all your lessons through inquiry. When it came to practical implementation tips they point out a great deal of resources, but many of these can be come across on their own or are pretty obvious The one idea That seemed unique and I was interested in learning more about was never explained, but instead pointed me to another source to be explained.

Overall this seems like a rehash of the first book with little updated and little information that can't be learned elsewhere. Save your 20 dollars and spend some time googling inquiry. If this is your first introduction to inquiry and your googlefu fails you it could be useful.
  • After reading Trevor's first book "Dive into Inquiry" i felt compelled to follow up with a book that would give the elementary teachers guidance on how to create a culture of Inquiry for the youngest minds. This book is exactly what you will need to help you foster an inquiry mindset in your younger students. Take a good look at all the wonderful sketches- if you are a visual learner like me, these will help you even more. The concrete examples provided in the book by its co author, Rebecca Bathurst-Hunt, are so easy to replicate and will spark more ideas for your implementation in the classroom. You won't go wrong with this book!
  • If you are interested in creating an atmosphere of inquisitive learners than this is the book for you! Trevor MacKenzie and Rebecca Bathurst-Hunt have put together an all in one inquiry adventure to implement into any classroom. Included within the pages of this insightful book are the descriptions of the pillars of inquiry (the different stages in which inquiry can look like within a classroom. Starting off slow with more teacher-led activities and ending with a free inquiry where students are in control.), examples of the inquiry quests, and different ideas to get you started on your inquiry journey. I am really excited to implement many of the activities explained in this book into my classroom. I highly recommend this book to anyone willing to instill the inquiry mindset in their own students.
  • After reading and loving Trevor's first book, Dive Into Inquiry, I hoped for a follow-up book aimed at elementary teachers. This is it! Inquiry Mindset supports and guides elementary teachers through the nuts and bolts of inquiry-based teaching and learning. It's format is approachable with tips for teaching and reflecting that can be put into practice right away. The Inquiry in Action steps at the end of each chapter encourage the reader to try something new, then share about the experience, making this book is ideal for a staff book study. Trevor and Rebecca bring their own classroom experiences to the table. As current classroom teachers, their knowledge and enthusiasm are genuine and credible. Think of them as the mentor colleagues you need to support your inquiry mindset. I suggest buying both books!
  • If you are a teacher or you homeschool , this is a wonderful resource to have. It will require you to rethink how a a classroom functions and how to develop your lessons. If you are willing to slowly release your control of teaching “critical thinking “ skills with worksheets that have nothing to do with critical thinking, and help your students develop real-world critical thinking skills, then this book will be invaluable for your teaching. Inquiry Mindset is well written and very easy to understand and implement. It uses narrative anecdotes and step-by-step directions on how to begin using this method of learning. I can’t say enough good things about this book- it changed my students, and my, way of thinking.
  • Trevor MacKenzie dives deeper into inquiry for the younger grade levels and reflects on the important elements to becoming and sustaining an inquiry practice in the classroom. He focuses on the questions not the answers and reminds readers of the importance behind this pedagogical approach. What's more, from the Inquiry Cycle to Public Displays of Understanding, he takes the teacher (reader) from start to finish by demonstrating real examples for teachers to follow. As an educator and proponent of Inquiry Based Instruction, this is a must-read for those who want to take their teaching practice to the next level and beyond.
  • Even though the author says this is for young children, I found most of his ideas not appropriate for kindergarten. (He teaches high school, so even though he co-authored with a kindergarten teacher, I saw little evidence of ideas that were actually appropriate for kindergarten).
