  • Oh, my God, this has to be the most depressing novel I have ever read in my life but it's so well written and engaging I have to give it five stars. I suppose what stayed with me the most was that she used historical diaries for research and many of the things that happened in the book could very well have happened to real people. There were many women who lived as men in the past that we know of. What got to me a lot was the powerlessness of being a woman back then. Part of my anger at the book was Sarah who I think is undeserving of such devoted love; some people are so ungrateful. Still, I suppose I shouldn't judge her too harshly, she was young, only sixteen when she was married, seventeen when she went off with Imogene. She was too young to know better but by the time they reached Nevada she should have grown up a little. If it wasn't for her weakness, they could have stayed teaching in the school and Imogene/Karl wouldn't have died in such a horrible accident. The whole time I was reading, my stomach was tight, wondering when the next horrible thing would happen but I guess that's how people back then lived and their lives were short.
  • I just finished this book, ordered some weeks ago when it was among an assortment of reduced price books for . The first I've read by Nevada Barr though I've been aware of her from various lists, etc. for several years. I LOVED Bittersweet, and can't remember when I've cried so often or so hard. On my zero to ten book rating list, it is definitely a ten. But I don't intend to ever read it again, which I often do with favorite books; it was too painful and poignant. Though I read more than a dozen reviews, as always there were differing opinions. I thought it was beautifully written. If you decide to read it, you may want to have tissues close by.
  • How easily it is to fall in love with the two main characters, a lesbian schoolteacher and her devoted partner, and to love the interesting story that enfolds of their struggles. It is a timely book, even though this one is set in the 1870's, as we are now struggling with the issue of same-sex marriage, gay rights, etc. However, back then, these things were not well-tolerated as we see in the obnoxious behavior of the various men throughout the book in their reactions to these two women. To me, love is love, but to many same sex love is simply unnatural. I must admit, there were times of tears.... the sign of a good book?!
  • It was so hard to put this book down, I wanted to read it all night long. It's one of the best books I've ever read. Whether you are gay or straight this book is a love story for anyone. It tugs at your heart strings and won't give up. I will not tell you how the story goes because it's better if you read it so you can truly enjoy how wonderful it is. I highly recommend this book.
  • I think I have read all of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon books and loved them all. Until I saw the listing for BITTERSWEET, I wasn't aware that she had written in any other genre besides mysteries.
Well, Ms Barr has not disappointed me. This historical fiction is well-written and captivating, even without the addition of dealing with the societal issue of the difficulty faced by a lesbian surviving in America more than 100 years in the past.
    Well done, Ms Barr!
  • I love all of Nevada Barr's books. She writes mostly about all the national parks where she was a ranger. Her stories are based around crimes that take place in those parks. THIS book is totally different. It is her first book and I wish she would write more like this one. It takes place in the 1800-1900's and focuses on women and their life in those days. This is prior to the right to vote or do much else. It is excellent. I reread it every few years because it is so well-written. I have also passed it on to many friends.
  • If you love historical fiction and lesbian or queer literature as much as me, BUY THIS BOOK. It is so beautifully written and powerful. I don't know how often I'll reread it but it belongs on my shelf forever.
  • I liked the story and the characters, but the story began to drag in the middle. A good "read" needs a beginning, middle, and an ending, all with a proper balance. I think this book needed a strong editor. It is typical of a "first book" and Nevada Barr got much better at action and plot development over her career. But, having said this, I think I enjoyed it enough to recommend it to other readers.
