- I read many many reviews about expectations not being met, not focused on the gospel & etc. I am reminded of two things. 1. The need to be open 2. Take the meat & throw away the bone. It does not matter that the spirit gave the author the idea of circling things in prayer. The consistent message is that as believers we are commanded to pray without ceasing & that is what circling is about. I am elated that I somehow came across this book. It has changed my prayer life tremendously. As I read I heard the spirit say “out of the box prayersâ€. My prayers had become far too common & I HAD TO shift into a realm that both scared & excited me so placed on the alter 1 prayer with a great belief of faith that came to pass 10/28/17. I wrote the prayer down on October 1, 2017. I am still in disbelief but my faith has risen to the level the Bible speak of in Hebrews 111, that’s the meat anything that does not apply is the bone but I am open now. I’m ready to read another book of this Author & I’m in waiting for the other things I wrote down to come to pass. I would say read this book with the intention of the Holy Spirit leading you into another realm of your faith & Christian walk but you will not get there with a closed mind. God knew it was time for me to shift so I stumbled across a blessing called “Draw the Circleâ€.
- I am a little more than halfway through this book and I appreciate it. It is not perfect. In fact, it is pretty white washed. For example, one of the examples of an important prayer was the prayer the founding fathers prayed during one of those historical meetings that shaped the country. And he definitely states this was a good thing that has gotten us to where we are today (or where we were in 2012 when the book was published). But, as a Black woman and an ancestor of enslaved people, I cannot get on board with things like that. White people have often “lightened†up history and Christianity to their benefit and I refuse to believe God wants us to celebrate those things without acknowledging the evils that were in people’s minds and hearts.
Also, the numerous causal references to the crackhouse they demolished to build their church’s coffee shop made me so sad. I wish it had been a story of how their progress helped those addicts and maybe how they addressed the system that keeps drugs in certain neighborhoods. But instead those people’s stories and struggles seemed erased with the erection of this holy choffeshop. Sometimes we can look right beyond the work to be done and do what seems prominent and big in our own minds. So I think God would be pleased with this man’s life and work but would offer him some reminders about humility and privilege.
But, given all that, I think the overall message to pray without ceasing is strong. It was helpful to see examples of what praying without ceasing actually can look like because I was feeling stuck in my walk and prayer life. - I have a progressive, incurable, neurological disease.
Need I say more?
But I'm walking away with a whole different perspective.
I'm submitting my life once again to Jesus. Just as I am, Lord.
Do with me and through me as you will, Lord Jesus.
I love you so. - Exceptional opportunity to read a devotional on prayer that is as person to person application of our opportunity to experience Grace and God in a daily time with Him. Having read more current books by Batterson and knowing more about his church, I feel this material is at the top of his list because he brings us to the throne in application of our time with God. - In the last month and a half I have read four books by Mark Batterson, and I have read each of the books twice. That speaks to the power of these books. But to be honest, this one might be the most powerful one yet and most likely to change your life and maybe even help to change the world. It all started when a friend recommended reading Praying Circles Around Your Children which was being offered for free in ebook format at the time. I started reading and only really stopped to pray for my kids. Then I got an advanced readers copy of The Circle Maker Student Edition dream big, pray hard, think long and again I was blown away. Then I read this and the original The Circle Maker at the same time. I was flipping back and forth. Now I know this book is designed to be read over 40 days and used as a tool to spark praying and thinking differently, but I could not put it down. I am now half way through a second time, only reading a day at a time as it was designed.
This book is amazing; it will change your relationship with God, challenge your prayer habits and help shape new patterns for both prayer and devotional time. In the Introduction Mark states "If you want God to do something new in you, you cannot keep doing the same old thing. You have to do something different. And if you do, God will create new capacities within you. There will be new gifts and new revelations. But you've got to pray the price. You'll get out of this what you put into it." Then on day 26 he states "If you want God to do something new in your life, you cannot keep doing the same old thing. My advice is simple do something different. And you'll see what a difference it makes!" And again on day 28 "If you want God to do something new, you cannot keep doing the same old thing." This book will help break you from the habit of same old same old. The Psalmist in Psalm 5112 declares "Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me." This book will rekindle your prayer life! Give it a try - you have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.
"In a moment of revelation, the circle maker realized that praying is planting. Each prayer is like a seed that gets planted in the ground. It disappears for a season, but it eventually bears fruit that blesses future generations. In fact, our prayers bear fruit forever."
So pick up this book and pray through the forty days. Plant new seeds and keep pray hard and thinking long!
