Alexander BestuzhevMarlinsky and Russian Byronism Lewis Bagby Books Reviews

  • The book is a lengthy look at Tsarist Russia, giving views of what it was like to struggle against a reactionary regime, that strongly opposed any reforms. The time is the early 19th century. We see the intersection between a literary subculture and the imperial government.

Unlike many books about famous authors, this only deals partially with its subject's writings. Much of the text is taken over with analysing the subject's dealings with his friends and with the changes happening in Russia. He joins the "Secret Society" and helps in their conspiracies. Much to no avail, as the Russian government was too entrenched.
