Practical Recording Techniques Second Edition Bruce Bartlett Jenny Bartlett 0073999097627 Books Reviews
- (9/7/2012)Edit I finally found the link to the audio examples, just by coincidence. I had stopped looking for them, but a couple of days ago, I just 'happened' to notice something almost, but not totally, at the back of the book called Practical Recording Techniques Demo Web Site. The passcode number, which is current and works for my book, is listed in the first paragraph on that page. I later noticed this area of the book listed in small print only below Table of Contents list Practical Recording Techniques Demo Web Site . . . . (page)631. I might not have noticed this Table of Contents line, because right beneath it, at the very bottom of the page, there is a note starting with capitals ONLINE at [...] . . . I was caught in that notice, and my books individual passcode is not found there.
I don't know how much of this is my own stupidity (although others in my class couldn't find the passcode number either), or lack of clear guidance by the book. However, having access to the examples now is helping me, as a beginner. The 9 chapters, already assigned in my class, have been difficult for me to understand, learn, remember. . . and now the examples give me something readily useable to me, linking the electronic concepts to sounds, with which I am already familiar.
So I have changed my rating to 4 stars, leaving off the fifth star because of all the drama I had to go through accessing the book, but having hope that I will be able to learn this eventually. Actually, if I weren't in a class using edition 5, I would recommend getting the new edition 6, just so the recommendations are current.

(Original review 8/29/2012)I am currently a student and bought this book to accompany an "Intro to recording studio" course. I don't know how to rate this book. Everything is fine, except that I can't find the access to the online audio examples. I would give it 4-5 stars for the book, but zero for inabilty to access the online audio demos (= 2 stars). On the 'table of contents page' I find this info "ONLINE at (a website). See the practical Recording Techinques Demo Web Site section for the passcode to access this site."
When I went to that site and followed the links, I was able to register (user name/password), but not able to get to the audio info. Instead, I get this message "Your account . . . does not have access to this material." I have gone through the book trying other numbers that have no explanation as to what they are for, but they don't work either. (Originally, when I registered I got a message that said the number I provided was either out of date or had previously been used, though my copy of the book was sold to me by as a new book.)
So, I am frustrated.
Yes, I got this new copy of the book from Aug 22, just a week after new 6th edition came out. I had to get the 5th edition, because it is the edition used in my course. So, does that mean that the split second the new edition came out, the previous edition's website was disabled? I looked at the 6th edition page on , only to find a comment with the only customer review, saying there is a problem with the info to the audio links there also, but it is being fixed.
What do I do about getting to the 5th edition audio files? My course is already in process. Apparently the other students in my course got the book during the summer. - The author, Bruce Bartlett, is a well known author in the recording industry, with over 900 magazine product reviews and articles on recording, and 8 books on recording techniques. He even started his own microphone company recently, manufacturing a sweet little acoustic guitar mic! He wrote this as an introduction to audio recording for the novice. With each edition of this book he has updated it to reflect the technological advancements since the previous edition.
Simply put, if you are thinking of getting into audio recording as a hobby or profession, get this book for it's easy explanations of the processes involved in this rather complex undertaking. If you want detailed explanations for "How to do" aspects of DAW recording, this is not the book for you, as it is NOT product specific, though he does utilize many different products in his explanations.
Mr. Bartlett is a professional audio engineer with a penchant for writing so that everyone can comprehend the recording/ editing/ mixing process. - To me, this is THE definitive book on studio recording techniques. Someone swiped my original copy of this book, and I just HAD to purchase another one to keep my library up to date. I've learned more about recording in my studio from this book than from ANY other books. If you want to learn about studio recording, GET THIS BOOK! HIGHLY recommended!
- I got this book just to put me over the top for free shipping. It is 12 years old and a lot, but not all, of the technology has changed. But if you don't have a basic foundation on recording terminology, there are some clearly written sections that will help you get started. You'll likely skip over more than half of the book, unless you are interested in ancient technology and recording history ... or have some really old gear that you'd like to play with.
I'm sure a decade ago this was a great book. Now, not so much. - Another excellent resource from Bruce Bartlett. The updates add important developments in the audio field. An excellent first resource for undergrads, hobbyists, or people just starting in the industry.
One note the companion website directions are very confused. There are three different website addresses referenced (inside title page, preface, and back cover), none of which have links to companion audio files. Hopefully this will be resolved or a passcode provided to 6th edition buyers for the 5th edition website. - If you always seem to be a bit be-fuddled when it comes to recording audio, this book will definitely help you as it did me. I experienced several "light-bulb" and "Ohhhh, that's what that is for!" moments while studying the contents of this book. My only wish would be for a comprehensive "mix" section dealing with external gear as well plug-ins. For instance, you always see on a piece of gear, "48 inputs available during mix-down". Other than that I can only give this text a very solid rating. Great book.
- i might have to buy this one out instead of renting. its very helpful for students or people trying to learn pro tools.
- Bruce is probably the most respected audio engineer in my area. This is a good basic starter book if you don't have much experience in audio. If you've worked in recorded or live audio much, you may not learn much new from it - it's pretty basic - but you might pick up a nugget here and there that you hadn't thought of before. If you want to make sure your basic knowledge of recording and mixing is complete, this is a good reference and is pretty up-to-date, but Bruce is coming out with a new edition soon (probably late 2012), so if you can wait, there will be an updated version.
